APAAR ID for NEET 2027: What It Is and How to Get It

Your NEET application form asks for an APAAR ID. Learn what this 12 digit student ID is, how to create it at school, and what NTA actually does with it.

APAAR ID for NEET 2027: What It Is and How to Get It

An APAAR ID is a unique 12 digit student identification number issued under the Ministry of Education's "One Nation, One Student ID" initiative, and it now has its own step inside the NEET application form. If you are registering for NEET 2027 and you hit a box asking for one, that is what it wants. The Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry is meant to hold your academic record in one place, linked to your Aadhaar and pushed into your DigiLocker account. Nothing about it changes your syllabus, your marks or your odds of an MBBS seat. It changes your paperwork.

What is an APAAR ID, and who issues it?

APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. The Ministry of Education describes it as a unique 12 digit student identification number linked to the Academic Bank of Credits, created so every learner carries one academic identity from school through higher education and skill programmes.

You do not apply for it the way you apply for a passport. For school students the number is generated inside the UDISE+ system against your PEN (the student identifier your school already holds), after your parent signs a consent form. Once it exists, the APAAR ID is pushed into your DigiLocker account and shows up under issued documents.

That matters in one narrow way. If your school has already run the consent drive, the number exists whether or not you remember it, and DigiLocker will show it in about a minute. If your school has not, you need to ask, because nobody will chase you about it.

Where does the APAAR ID appear in the NEET application form?

Three places, and they are worth knowing before registration opens. The NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin lists "register APAAR ID" among the fields that go final and non-editable once you pay the fee. It also gives the field its own screen, Step 9 of the application walkthrough. Then it reappears on the exam day document list.

Where the APAAR ID turns up What the 2026 bulletin says
The registration flow Step 9 of the online application form is "Entering the APAAR ID of the candidate"
The non-editable field list "register APAAR ID" sits alongside address, disability details and identity details as final after fee payment
Exam day photo ID Listed with PAN card, driving licence, Voter ID, passport, Aadhaar card and DigiLocker as an authorised photo ID

Read that middle row twice. Once your confirmation page is generated, NTA will not edit these particulars except during the correction window, and the bulletin says so in flat language: any request for change "will not be considered by NTA under any circumstances". Our guide to the NEET 2027 application form walks the rest of that flow.

Is the APAAR ID mandatory for NEET?

Not according to the document that decides it. The word "mandatory" appears twice in the NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin, and both times it refers to the parent or guardian mobile number and email address. The APAAR ID gets a form field, a non-editable status and a place on the photo ID list. It never gets called compulsory.

So why do so many pages say it is? Because a form field and a rule look identical from the outside. NTA clearly wants the number, has built a step for it, and has made it an accepted ID at the centre. That is a strong hint about where this is going. It is still not a published requirement, so get the number anyway and let the 2027 bulletin settle the rest.

How do you create an APAAR ID, step by step?

Through your school, in four stages that the APAAR portal sets out plainly. Parents learn about it at school, a consent form is filled voluntarily, the UDISE system generates the number against the student's PEN, and the finished APAAR ID lands in the student's DigiLocker account. For remote areas, a Common Service Centre can generate one too.

  1. Check DigiLocker first. Sign in, open the issued documents section, and look for an APAAR card. If it is there, you are done and the number is on it.
  2. If it is not there, ask your school office whether the APAAR consent drive has happened for your class, and whether your PEN is recorded.
  3. Get the consent form signed by a parent or guardian. This is voluntary, and it is the step that unblocks everything after it.
  4. Check that the details the school will submit match your Aadhaar exactly: name as per Aadhaar, Aadhaar number, date of birth, gender, mobile number, and both parents' names.
  5. Wait for the number to appear in DigiLocker, then save a screenshot somewhere you will find it in February.
  6. If your school cannot help, use the nearest Common Service Centre, or call the APAAR helpline on 18008893511.

One warning worth repeating. The usual reason an APAAR ID fails to generate is a name or date of birth that does not match Aadhaar. Fix the Aadhaar record first, because the same mismatch will bite you again at the NEET form stage.

What if your APAAR ID details do not match your Aadhaar?

You end up doing extra paperwork, and possibly twice. The bulletin is unusually direct about this: candidates who register with something other than an Aadhaar card often have to upload additional documents to prove who they are, so NTA advises using your own Aadhaar card as the mode of identity verification.

It goes further. Your live photograph, captured during the application, is matched against the photograph held in the UIDAI database. If that match fails, or if you chose a non Aadhaar mode of verification, you have to upload a signed and attested certificate with a recent photograph, certified by your school or college principal or by a Class I Gazetted Officer.

Candidate category Identity details the bulletin permits
Indian nationals of all states Aadhaar card, Indian passport number, DigiLocker, PAN card number, or any other valid Central or State Government issued photo identity card
NRIs Passport number
Foreign nationals and OCI Passport number

If your Aadhaar has the wrong spelling, an old photograph or a stale address, update it through UIDAI before registration rather than during it. The correction window on the NEET form is short and it does not cover everything, as our post on NEET 2027 eligibility criteria and the category certificate rules both explain.

Can you use an APAAR ID as photo ID on exam day?

Yes. The 2026 bulletin's exam day document list names APAAR ID among the authorised photo IDs, next to PAN card, driving licence, Voter ID, passport, Aadhaar card and DigiLocker. The requirement is that whatever you bring is original and valid. Candidates who turn up without one of these are not allowed to sit.

Most aspirants will still carry Aadhaar, and there is no prize for being clever here. Bring the ID whose details match your confirmation page, and do not improvise on the morning. The rest of the centre rules, including what you can wear, sit in our NEET dress code guide.

Verified and registered count different things, so the gap is not a growth figure.

How many APAAR IDs already exist in India?

A lot, which is the real reason this field showed up in your exam form. The Ministry of Education reported 26.35 crore verified APAAR IDs generated across India as of 2 July 2026. The APAAR portal's own live counter, read on 11 September 2026, showed 33.74 crore registered IDs. Those two numbers count different things.

The same factsheet explains the machinery underneath. The Academic Bank of Credits, regulated by the University Grants Commission, stores and transfers academic credits earned at recognised institutions, valid for up to seven years. Your APAAR ID is the key to that account.

None of that helps you score 180 in Biology. It does explain why an exam agency this size wants a stable student identifier, rather than matching lakhs of candidates by name and date of birth every cycle.

Your APAAR ID checklist before NEET 2027 registration opens

NTA has not yet published the NEET (UG) 2027 Information Bulletin, so everything above is the 2026 position. Treat it as the working assumption and verify it against the 2027 document the day it appears. In the meantime, five small jobs remove most of the risk.

  1. Open DigiLocker and check whether an APAAR card is already sitting in your issued documents.
  2. Compare the name, date of birth and gender on it against your Class 10 certificate and your Aadhaar. Fix mismatches through UIDAI now, not in February.
  3. If no APAAR ID exists, ask your school about the consent form this week. School calendars get busy closer to boards.
  4. Save the number and a screenshot in the same place you keep your Class 10 certificate and category certificate.
  5. When the 2027 bulletin appears on the NEET portal, read the identity section first and check whether anything has changed.

If you are also planning for the switch to computer based testing, our guide to NEET 2027 CBT mode preparation covers what actually changes on screen.

Paperwork is the cheapest part of this exam to get right, and you can finish it in an afternoon. When you go back to Physics, Chemistry and Biology, NEETsheet is our app for practice questions and full length mocks, so you can see where the marks are leaking.

It is a permanent 12 digit student number issued under the Ministry of Education's One Nation, One Student ID initiative. It links your academic records across school, higher education and skill programmes to one account, and a copy lands in your DigiLocker so you can pull it up whenever a form asks.

NTA has not published the 2027 bulletin yet. In the 2026 bulletin the APAAR ID has its own application step and is an accepted photo ID at the centre, but the document never calls it mandatory. Create one anyway, then confirm against the 2027 bulletin when it appears.

Sign in to DigiLocker and open the issued documents section, where the virtual APAAR card is stored once it has been generated. If nothing is there, the number was probably never created for you, so ask your school office about the consent form or call the helpline on 18008893511.

The 2026 bulletin does not state that you cannot, since it never marks the field as mandatory. Practically, leaving it blank is a gamble on a form whose entries become non editable after fee payment. Getting the number in advance costs nothing and removes the question entirely.

No. Aadhaar remains the identity verification mode NTA recommends, because your live photograph is matched against the UIDAI database and other modes trigger extra attested paperwork. The APAAR ID sits beside Aadhaar as an academic identifier and as one more accepted photo ID on exam day.

Your UDISE+ student identifier (PEN), your name, date of birth and gender, a mobile number, your mother's and father's names, and your name and number exactly as they appear on Aadhaar. Any mismatch between school records and Aadhaar is the usual reason generation fails.
