NEET Reservation Categories: The Certificates You Need
NEET reservation works in two different places, run by two different sets of people, and mixing them up is what costs candidates their category every year. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the exam, only records the category you declare and applies your category's pass bar. The actual seat quotas come later, from counselling authorities. What NTA asks of you is small and easy to get wrong: hold a valid, current category certificate in the correct format before you open the application form. There are five category options — General, General-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST — plus a separate column for candidates with benchmark disabilities.
A quick glossary before we start, because NEET reservation is thick with abbreviations. NEET is the single national entrance exam for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses. NTA is the agency that runs it. NMC, the National Medical Commission, sets the medical eligibility rules NTA applies. MCC, the Medical Counselling Committee, allots seats in the All India Quota (AIQ) — the 15% of government MBBS and BDS seats pooled nationally, with the rest handled by each State. A percentile is not a mark; it says what share of the candidates you finished ahead of.
What are the NEET reservation categories?
A NEET reservation category is the official group you declare in your NTA application form so that your result can be placed in the right category list. The 2026 information bulletin gives five choices — General, General-EWS, SC, ST and OBC-NCL — and asks you to select the one that genuinely applies to you.
Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) sit outside that list. The bulletin is explicit that only candidates with benchmark disabilities fill that column and everyone else leaves it blank. You can therefore be, say, OBC-NCL and PwBD at the same time.
Category | Who it covers | Where the official list lives |
|---|---|---|
General | Candidates claiming no reservation | Not applicable |
General-EWS | Economically Weaker Section, under the January 2019 central office memoranda | Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment |
OBC-NCL | Other Backward Classes, Non-Creamy Layer | |
SC | Scheduled Castes | State and central notified lists |
ST | Scheduled Tribes | State and central notified lists |
The OBC-NCL rule is the one that catches most people. The bulletin says the OBC-NCL box should only be selected by candidates who belong to the Central List of OBCs published by the National Commission for Backward Classes. And it gives a plain instruction for everyone else: candidates of reserved categories who do not fall under one of those listed categories may, for the purpose of filling the NEET application form, apply under the General category.
That instruction is worth reading twice, because it is not a punishment. It is NTA telling you what to do so your form is not rejected later for a mismatch. Most confusion about NEET reservation starts here, with a State list mistaken for the central one.
Which certificate does each NEET category need?
Every category except General needs a document, and each document comes from a different office. Getting the wrong one, or an expired one, is the single most common paperwork failure in NEET reservation. Here is what the bulletin and NTA's document advisory ask for, category by category.
Category | Document you need | Issued by | The bit that trips people up |
|---|---|---|---|
General | None | — | Nothing to arrange |
General-EWS | EWS income and asset certificate | Your State's competent revenue authority | It has to be current and valid — not a copy from an earlier year |
OBC-NCL | Non-Creamy Layer certificate | Your State's competent authority | Your community must be on the Central OBC list, not only the State list |
SC / ST | Caste or community certificate | Your State's competent authority | Uploaded with the form, then verified again at counselling |
PwBD | UDID card, or a disability certificate in the proper format | Issuing medical authority; UDID via the UDID portal | UDID details are checked against the UDID portal; a permanent UDID has to be produced at counselling |
Two details from the bulletin are worth spelling out. First, the caste or community certificate you upload with the application is not the end of it — the related documents are verified again at the time of counselling by the concerned central or State counselling authority. Second, if you do not hold a UDID card, you upload a disability certificate in the proper format, and NTA may verify it with the authority that issued it.

Your category certificate is uploaded once with the application and checked again at counselling — so it has to be right the first time.
What does your category actually change inside NEET?
Three things, and only three, while the exam is still NTA's business. NEET reservation changes what you pay, it changes the percentile you must clear, and it changes which category list your result is published in. It does not change the paper, the duration, the marking or the syllabus.
Stage | Who decides | What your category changes |
|---|---|---|
Application fee | NTA | ₹1,700 General; ₹1,600 General-EWS and OBC-NCL; ₹1,000 SC, ST, PwBD, PwD and Third Gender |
Minimum qualifying percentile | NMC rules, applied by NTA | 50th percentile for General and General-EWS; 40th for SC, ST and OBC-NCL; 45th for Unreserved and Gen-EWS candidates with benchmark disabilities |
Merit lists, quotas and seats | MCC and State counselling authorities | Everything about the actual seat — NTA states plainly that merit lists, category lists, domicile determination and counselling are the remit of the admitting and State authorities, and that it has no role in them |

The percentile row is the one people misread most often, so it is worth being blunt: a lower qualifying percentile is a lower pass mark, not a better rank. NEET reservation moves the bar you have to clear; it does not move you up a queue. Our guide to what NTA actually publishes about marks and rank works through the difference with the 2026 numbers.
Why get the certificate now instead of in February?
Because a revenue office works to its own calendar, not yours. An EWS or non-creamy-layer certificate needs an application, verification and sometimes a fresh income assessment, and none of that speeds up because a form is closing. This is the one part of NEET reservation that is genuinely in your hands, and it is the part most candidates leave until last.
NTA says the same thing in its own words. The 2026 bulletin advises all eligible aspirants to make sure their Aadhaar card, UDID card and category certificate are updated well in advance of applying, specifically to avoid discrepancies, grievances or rejection at a later stage. NTA also published a standalone advisory on updating exactly those three documents on 5 January 2026, a month before the 2026 application window opened.
As of 31 August 2026, NTA has not released the NEET (UG) 2027 information bulletin or the 2027 application dates, so nobody can tell you a real deadline yet. What we do know is the shape of the last cycle: the 2026 form opened in February and the exam was originally set for 3 May 2026. If 2027 follows that shape, a certificate you start today has months of slack. A certificate you start in February has none. Our NEET 2027 application form walkthrough covers the rest of the upload list.

How did the NEET reservation categories perform in 2026?
NTA publishes category-wise qualified figures with every result, and the 2026 set is the most recent official picture of NEET reservation in practice. Close to 20 lakh candidates appeared, at 5,440 centres in 551 Indian cities and 14 cities abroad, and 11.21 lakh qualified. Those numbers are the only official measure of NEET reservation outcomes anyone has.
Category-wise qualified candidates as published in the National Testing Agency press release "NTA Declares Result of NEET (UG) 2026", 16 July 2026. The five category totals adding up to 11.21 lakh is our own arithmetic on those published figures.
Two things stand out. OBC-NCL is the largest qualified group by a wide margin — larger than General. And the five figures add up exactly to the 11.21 lakh total, which tells you that PwBD (3,666 qualified) and PwD (303 qualified) are counted inside those categories rather than alongside them. That matches how the form works: PwBD is a status you carry in addition to a category, not instead of one.
One honest caveat about all of it: qualifying is not the same as getting a seat. Every one of those 11.21 lakh candidates cleared the pass bar, and MBBS seats in India number far fewer. NEET reservation decides how the shortlist is ordered at counselling; it does not create seats.
PwBD and PwD: what is recorded differently?
Quite a lot, and it is the part of NEET reservation with the longest paper trail — it starts well before the exam. If you tick the PwBD column, NTA verifies your UDID details against the UDID portal run by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. Without a UDID card, you upload a disability certificate in the proper format instead, and NTA may check it with the issuing authority.
If you will use a scribe — someone who writes your answers for you — the bulletin asks for the scribe's Aadhaar details in the application form itself, specifically so you are not chasing extra documents later. You may also need a scanned signature of the scribe, the scribe's qualification certificate, an undertaking if you are bringing your own scribe, and a certificate of physical limitation to write. NTA opened a dedicated portal for submitting scribe details in the 2026 cycle.
The other PwBD-specific point is a counselling one: a permanent UDID has to be produced at counselling, where a medical or physical assessment at a designated centre is what actually establishes the claim.
Can you change your category after submitting the form?
Only if category is one of the fields NTA opens in that cycle's correction window. The bulletin's rule is narrow: once the form is finally submitted, particulars in certain specific fields may be changed only during the stipulated correction window, and after that no communication on the matter will be entertained.
NTA announces each correction window as a separate public notice — it did so for the 2026 cycle in March 2026 — and the list of editable fields is set there, not in advance. So the safe assumption is the unhelpful one: get the NEET reservation field right the first time, and watch the NTA public notices page once you have applied. Our NEET 2027 eligibility guide covers the other fields that are worth getting right at first submission.
Five mistakes that cost candidates their category
- Ticking OBC-NCL off a State list. The NEET form means the Central List published by NCBC. If your community is not on it, the bulletin's own instruction is to apply as General.
- Reusing last year's EWS certificate. An EWS income and asset certificate has to be valid and current. A scanned copy from a previous year is the classic rejection.
- Assuming a category certificate is the seat. It is not. NTA records the category; MCC and the State authorities apply the quotas and verify the documents again at counselling.
- Filling the PwBD column without a benchmark disability. The bulletin says only PwBD candidates fill it and everyone else leaves it blank. A stray tick creates a mismatch you then have to unwind.
- Leaving the scribe paperwork to exam week. Scribe Aadhaar details go into the application form. Sorting them there is the whole point of the field.
Work through that list once and NEET reservation stops being a worry — it becomes one uploaded document you do not think about again. If you are still weighing what happens if the rank does not land where you need it, futureMBBS covers the recognised MBBS-abroad routes in detail. That is a decision for after the result, not a reason to hedge on the exam.

Frequently Asked Questions
Five, in the NTA application form: General, General-EWS, SC, ST and OBC-NCL. Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) are recorded in a separate column that sits alongside your category, so a candidate can be both OBC-NCL and PwBD. The 2026 bulletin says only candidates with benchmark disabilities should fill that column.
No. NTA's stated role is to conduct the exam, declare the result on the eligibility criteria set by NMC, and issue the All India Rank. It says merit lists, category lists, domicile determination and counselling belong to the admitting and State authorities. Quotas are applied at counselling — by MCC for the All India Quota and by each State for its own seats.
The Central List of Other Backward Classes published by the National Commission for Backward Classes. The bulletin is specific that only candidates on that list should select OBC-NCL, and that candidates from reserved groups who are not on the listed categories may apply under the General category for the purpose of the NEET form.
An EWS income and asset certificate issued under the January 2019 central office memoranda from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. NTA's advice is to make sure it is updated and valid before you apply, rather than after — an out-of-date certificate is one of the discrepancies its own document advisory warns about.
Only if NTA lists category among the editable fields for that cycle. The bulletin says particulars in certain specific fields may be changed only during the stipulated correction window, and no requests are entertained afterwards. The editable list is published in that cycle's correction notice, so treat your first submission as final.
UDID details are verified against the UDID portal of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. If you do not have a UDID card, you upload a disability certificate in the proper format and NTA may verify it with the issuing authority. A permanent UDID has to be produced at counselling for the medical assessment.
