NEET 2027 Exam Centres: How Your City and Venue Get Decided

NEET 2027 exam centres are allotted by a computer, not by a person, from the three cities you list on your application form. You choose cities; the National Testing Agency (NTA) chooses the building. For NEET (UG) 2026, the exam that decides MBBS, BDS and AYUSH admission across the country, close to 20 lakh candidates sat the paper at 5,440 centres spread across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad. That scale is the reason the rules around NEET 2027 exam centres are strict, and it is also why the reported move to a computer-based test matters more for where you sit than for what you answer.

What is a NEET exam centre, and who decides yours?

A NEET exam centre is the specific building, usually a school or college, where NTA seats you for the paper. You never apply to a centre directly. Instead, you select three cities in order of preference, and an automated allotment process assigns you a venue within those cities, subject to the number of candidates each city needs to accommodate.

That split between city and centre trips up a lot of first-time candidates. The city is a choice you make in February or March, months before the paper. The centre is a decision NTA makes much later, once it knows how many candidates each city has to absorb and which buildings are available on exam day.

It also explains why "change my centre" requests go nowhere, and why NEET 2027 exam centres will be no different. The 2026 bulletin is blunt about it: NTA "reserves the right to allot any centre to the candidate. No request for change of centre shall be entertained." The only lever you genuinely control is the three cities you type into the form, which is why the NEET 2027 application form deserves more care than most students give it.

How are NEET 2027 exam centres allotted?

Allotment runs on rules, not requests. You list three cities in priority order on the application form, a computer matches candidates to venues inside those cities, and NTA keeps override rights for cases where the numbers do not work. In 2026 the same engine placed close to 20 lakh candidates in a single sitting.

The rules that actually govern NEET 2027 exam centres, taken from the current bulletin, are worth reading slowly:

• Three cities, in order of preference. Some candidates see only one or two options, depending on their address.
• Allotment is automated. The bulletin states there is no human intervention in the process.
• NTA can merge cities. If fewer than a minimum number of candidates opt for a city, one, two or more cities may be merged.
• Language can move you. If too few candidates in your chosen city opt for a regional-language paper, you may be allotted a centre in another city entirely.
• Travel is on you. No travel or dearness allowance is paid to any candidate, including SC, ST and PwBD candidates, and you attend "at her/his own risk and expenses".

The practical reading for NEET 2027 exam centres: your first city choice is a strong signal, not a guarantee. Candidates who pick one big city plus two neighbouring towns in the same state usually land somewhere workable. Candidates who pick three cities hundreds of kilometres apart are gambling with a 3 a.m. bus ride.

Which cities can you choose for NEET 2027 exam centres?

Only cities within your own state are generally available. The bulletin limits the choice of examination cities to the state of your permanent address or present address and publishes the full state-wise list with city codes in an appendix. You cannot register from Patna and choose Delhi simply because your coaching centre is there.

The list itself is long and surprisingly granular. Andhra Pradesh, for example, includes city codes from Amaravathi and Anantapur through to Vizianagaram, while every state and union territory has its own entries, including Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. That level of detail is deliberate: NTA wants candidates to have access to nearby cities rather than having to travel hundreds of kilometres.

Two things follow when you shortlist NEET 2027 exam centres. First, choose your own city or genuinely neighbouring cities where possible. The bulletin makes this clear and adds that NTA "will not be responsible for any inconvenience due to the incorrect selection of cities". Second, do not assume that a small district town is automatically the safest choice just because it is closest. Low-demand cities are precisely the ones NTA may merge.

How big is the NEET centre network?

Big enough that logistics, rather than individual preference, drives many of the decisions. NTA's result press release for NEET (UG) 2026 records the exam being held at 5,440 centres across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad, in 13 languages, for close to 20 lakh candidates. Dividing the number of centres by the number of Indian cities gives an average of about ten centres per city.

Where NEET (UG) 2026 was actually held

Roughly 10 centres per Indian city, on average.

Two other numbers from the same release put the pressure in context: 11.21 lakh candidates qualified for MBBS, dental, AYUSH and allied programmes, and more than 58% of qualified candidates were women. A network that has to accommodate around 20 lakh people in one examination simply cannot optimise for individual convenience. That constraint is one of the clearest indicators of how NEET 2027 exam centres are likely to be managed as well.

Will CBT change NEET 2027 exam centres?

Almost certainly yes, and this is the part worth watching. A pen-and-paper exam can run in any classroom with desks. A computer-based test needs working machines, power backup, and a network at every seat, a far smaller pool of buildings than the 5,440 venues NTA used in 2026.

Three consequences follow logically from that constraint, and none of them are officially confirmed yet:

1. Fewer eligible buildings per city. Schools without computer labs drop out of the pool, which can push candidates in smaller towns towards district headquarters.

3. A new city list. The appendix of eligible cities is rebuilt every cycle anyway; under CBT it may look meaningfully different.

Here is the honest status as of today: the switch to a computer-based test from 2027 has been announced publicly by the Union Education Minister, but NTA has not published a NEET (UG) 2027 information bulletin, a 2027 city list, or any operational notice about NEET 2027 exam centres. Until it does, anyone quoting a 2027 centre count or city list is guessing. When will you know your NEET 2027 exam centre?

In stages, and later than most candidates expect. NEET 2027 exam centres are likely to be revealed the way the 2026 centres were: NTA names the city before it names the building. In the 2026 cycle, it published an "Advance Intimation of Examination City" notice before the exam and released admit cards, which carry the actual centre address, closer to exam day.

The gap between the city notice and the admit card exists for a practical reason: it gives you time to arrange travel and accommodation before you know the precise address. Use it. Booking a room after the admit card is released, in a city hosting tens of thousands of candidates, can mean paying significantly more.

What happens at the centre on exam day?

Frisking, verification and a strict entry cut-off are likely to remain part of the routine at NEET 2027 exam centres. For the 3 May 2026 paper, the bulletin scheduled the centre to open at 11:00 a.m. for a 2:00 p.m. start, with no entry after 1:30 p.m. Instructions were read from 1:30 to 1:45 p.m., booklets were distributed at 1:45 p.m., and the paper ran until 5:00 p.m.

What you can and cannot carry inside is equally specific. The bulletin bars textual material, paper scraps, geometry or pencil boxes, calculators, log tables, pens, scales and writing pads. Communication devices, including mobile phones, Bluetooth earpieces and health bands, are also prohibited, along with wallets, goggles, handbags, belts, caps, watches, bracelets, metallic items, food and water. Centres do not make arrangements to store your belongings, so leave them with family or at home.

Two other rules matter more than students often realise. Heavy clothing and long sleeves are discouraged, while low-heeled slippers or sandals are preferred. Candidates wearing customary or religious articles are asked to report earlier so that frisking can be completed without a rush. Frisking of female candidates is carried out inside a closed enclosure by female staff only.

How should you plan the journey to your centre?

Treat it as a rehearsal, not an errand. Every year a handful of candidates miss a hard 1:30 p.m. gate over a traffic jam or a wrong address, after two years of work. The fix costs one afternoon. Work through this sequence once NEET 2027 exam centres are announced.

1. Choose your three cities honestly. Pick your own city first, then two genuinely nearby ones in the same state, never a distant city because a friend is going there.
2. Save the city notice the day it appears. Screenshot the allotted city and start looking at travel and stay options immediately, before the admit card wave.
3. Download the admit card and read the address twice. Match the centre name against a map; several cities have two schools with near-identical names.
4. Do a physical dry run. Travel to the centre on a similar day of the week, at a similar time, and note the actual door candidates enter through.
5. Pack the night before. Admit card, the photo ID named on it, the required photographs and nothing else, no watch, no wallet, no phone.
6. Aim to arrive when the centre opens, not when it closes. Reporting at 11:00 a.m. for a 1:30 p.m. cut-off costs you nothing; arriving at 1:25 p.m. can cost you the year.

Centre mistakes that are easy to avoid

The most common mistake with NEET 2027 exam centres is treating the city choice as a formality. It is the only part of the process you control, and it is locked once the correction window closes, check the rules in our NEET 2027 eligibility criteria and application posts before you fill it.

The second is trusting an unofficial "NEET 2027 exam centres list" published months before NTA releases one. Those lists are recycled from previous cycles. Until the 2027 bulletin appears, no accurate 2027 city list exists anywhere.

The third is under-preparing for the room itself. A centre is noisy, cold or hot, and full of strangers; if every mock you have written was at your own desk in silence, exam day is a shock.
