AFMC Pune MBBS Admission After NEET 2027: Full Guide
AFMC Pune — the Armed Forces Medical College — is where 145 students a year study MBBS as medical cadets and then serve as commissioned officers in the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). You can't apply to it directly. You qualify NEET UG, the single national entrance test for MBBS, then tick AFMC while registering for counselling on the MCC portal, and if you're shortlisted you travel to Pune for a written test, a psychological test, an interview and a full medical board.
That last part is what makes this different from every other MBBS seat in the country. A regular government college asks for your rank. AFMC Pune asks for your rank, your Class 12 marksheet in a very specific shape, your eyesight, your height, and seven years of your life afterwards. If you're in Class 11 or Class 12 right now and this route interests you, some of those conditions have to be protected long before NEET 2027.
What is AFMC Pune, exactly?
AFMC Pune is a Ministry of Defence medical college that trains doctors specifically to be commissioned into the Army, Navy and Air Force medical services. It is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik and recognised by the National Medical Commission, and its graduate wing has been running since 1962.
The course itself is the standard Indian MBBS: four and a half academic years followed by 12 months of compulsory rotating internship, done in service hospitals recognised by the NMC. What sits on top of the degree is a commission. Cadets at AFMC Pune aren't just students in a hostel — they're being prepared to wear a uniform, which is why physical standards, discipline and a psychological assessment are part of getting in at all.

Why are NEET aspirants reading about AFMC Pune in the middle of August?
Because the 2026 cycle is live right now. The Medical Counselling Committee's website confirms that NEET UG counselling 2026 Round 1 registration has started, and AFMC applications are made inside exactly that MCC registration window — there is no separate portal and no second chance later in the year.
For a NEET 2027 aspirant, that's the useful part. You're watching this year's batch move through the process about nine months before your own turn. The conditions that decide whether you're even allowed into it — your Class 12 subject combination, your first-attempt result, your eyesight — are being set in your school year right now, not in the counselling week.
The 145 seats, and how tight the funnel really is
AFMC Pune admitted 145 medical cadets for 2026: 115 boys and 30 girls, on two separate merit lists. Up to 10 of those 145 seats go to candidates from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Separately, the Government of India may sponsor up to five NEET-qualified students from friendly foreign countries.
Roughly 2,000 candidates — 1,600 boys and 400 girls — are called to Pune for screening based on merit. So the screening itself is not a formality. About one in fourteen of the people who reach AFMC Pune walk out with a seat, and a medically unfit verdict removes a candidate from the final merit list regardless of how high the NEET score was.

Two of these deserve a plain-language warning. "First attempt" means a compartment or a repeat of the Class 12 board exam closes this door, even if your NEET score is excellent. And the 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology is an AFMC condition on top of whatever the NEET bulletin asks — students who treat boards as a formality while chasing NEET marks lose AFMC Pune without ever knowing it. How does AFMC Pune selection work, step by step?
The sequence is fixed and there are no shortcuts inside it. Here is the whole thing, in order.
- Pass Class 12 in the first attempt with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Biotechnology, meeting the 60% and 50% marks conditions above.
- Qualify NEET UG. AFMC Pune has no entrance exam of its own — a valid NEET (UG) qualification conducted by the National Testing Agency is compulsory.
- Register on the MCC portal and specifically apply for AFMC during the registration window announced by the Directorate General of Health Services. Miss the window and the year is gone.
- Watch for the shortlist. The NEET roll numbers called for screening, and the screening schedule, are published on AFMC's own websites. Requests to change your interview date are not entertained except in exceptional circumstances.
- Attend the screening at Pune — ToELR, the Psychological Assessment Test, the interview and the medical board — carrying all original certificates, your NEET admit card, your scorecard and any NCC or sports certificates.
- Check the two merit lists (one for boys, one for girls) and, if selected, report and sign the service liability and bond agreement along with your parent or guardian.
How is the AFMC Pune merit score calculated?
Your NEET score is most of it, but not all of it. ToELR is a computer-based test of 40 multiple-choice questions worth 2 marks each — 80 marks in 30 minutes, with 0.5 negative marking per wrong answer. Those 80 marks are added to your NEET score out of 720, and the total of 800 is divided by 4 to give a written score out of 200.
The interview then adds up to 50 marks, judged on general awareness, interests, hobbies and personality, with extra weightage for NCC and sports participation at school, district, state or national level, and for wards of serving and ex-service personnel. The Psychological Assessment Test is qualifying only — it doesn't add marks. Final merit at AFMC Pune is out of 250.

Read that ratio honestly. A brilliant interview can't rescue a weak NEET score, because 200 of the 250 marks are already decided before you reach Pune. What does the 7-year service liability actually commit you to?
Every cadet admitted with service liability has a compulsory obligation to serve as a commissioned officer in the AFMS. Short Service Commission officers owe seven years of service after passing out; Permanent Commission officers serve until superannuation. Which one you get is decided on merit-cum-option at the final MBBS examination, depending on vacancies.
At the time of admission, parents or guardians sign a bond agreement for ₹71,00,000. Anyone withdrawing more than seven days after admission pays bond money as per the rules in force. A cadet declared Non-Service Liability on medical grounds — that is, released from the obligation to serve because of illness — doesn't pay the bond, but does pay the cost of training and tuition, and the no-objection certificate for internship is issued only after dues are cleared.
In return, the training years are heavily supported: subsidised messing and rations, hostel accommodation, railway warrants for travel home, a book and equipment allowance of ₹6,000 per cadet per year, and a compulsory group insurance scheme with a ₹15,00,000 cover for a one-time premium of ₹7,200. AFMC Pune publishes its fees only in the joining instructions issued with the merit list, so treat any fee figure floating around before that as unverified.
After the degree, the ladder is the standard commissioned one — Lieutenant on commissioning, Captain on completing internship, Major after four years as a Captain. Specialisation happens through NEET-PG or the National Exit Test, with AFMS institutes training roughly 400 postgraduate and 45 super-specialty candidates each year. Is AFMC Pune the right target for you, honestly?
Not for everyone, and that's fine. Seven years of committed service is a real trade — you get a fully supported medical education, an assured job, and clinical exposure most graduates never see, but you don't get to change your mind casually at 23. The bond makes that concrete.
The practical way to hold both options open is to not let AFMC Pune distort your year. Its own scoring says NEET is 80% of the decision, so the work is the same work: syllabus, mocks, revision. Keep your Class 12 boards clean and in one attempt, get your eyesight and height checked honestly rather than hopefully, and keep NCC or a sport going if you already enjoy it.
