NEET vs JEE: Pattern, Marks and Eligibility Compared
NEET vs JEE is a choice between two very different exams run by the same body, the National Testing Agency (NTA). NEET (UG) is the single entrance test for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH seats across India: 180 multiple choice questions, 720 marks, one pen and paper sitting. JEE Main is the engineering test for NITs and IIITs, with 75 questions on a computer screen, two sessions a year and percentile scores. The top 2,50,000 then sit JEE Advanced for the IITs. This guide puts the official 2026 rules of both side by side so you can see which exam fits you.
What is the difference between NEET and JEE?
The difference between NEET and JEE is the door each one opens. NEET (UG) is the qualifying and ranking test for undergraduate medical, dental and AYUSH courses, and its 2026 result press release adds B.Sc. (H) Nursing and the 15% VCI quota in veterinary science. JEE Main Paper 1 is used for B.E. and B.Tech admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, and it is also the qualifying test for JEE Advanced, which IITs use.
So the real NEET vs JEE question is not "which exam is easier" but "which seat do I want". A doctor's route starts with NEET. An engineer's route starts with JEE Main. If you are still deciding on the career itself, our sister site has a careful doctor vs engineer comparison on years, pay and stress. This post stays with the two exams.
Here is the whole NEET vs JEE comparison in one table, from the NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin, the JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin and the JEE (Advanced) 2026 Information Brochure.

How do the NEET vs JEE papers compare, question by question?
In the NEET vs JEE contrast, NEET is the breadth test against the clock. All 180 questions are single-correct MCQs with four options, and the paper runs from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. That is exactly one minute per question, so speed and accuracy on familiar NCERT ground decide most of the score.
JEE Main is a depth test. Each subject has 20 MCQs in Section A and 5 questions in Section B where you type a numerical answer with an on-screen keypad, rounded to the nearest integer. The bulletin is clear that Section B now has negative marking too, so a guessed number costs you a mark just like a guessed option. With 75 questions in 180 minutes you get about 2.4 minutes per question, and you need it: the questions are built to take longer.
The marking scheme is the one thing the two papers share. A right answer earns +4, a wrong one costs 1, and a blank costs nothing. Our guide to NEET negative marking works through what one wrong answer really costs, and the arithmetic is the same on the JEE paper.
Why does Biology decide NEET and Maths decide JEE?
Look at the chart again, because it settles half of the NEET vs JEE argument on its own. In NEET, Biology alone is worth as much as Physics and Chemistry together. In JEE Main, every subject is worth exactly one third. A student who is strong in Biology and shaky in Maths gets rewarded by one paper and punished by the other.
The tie-break rules say the same thing a second time. When two NEET candidates finish on equal marks, NTA separates them by Biology marks first, then Chemistry, then Physics, then by the lower ratio of wrong to right answers. JEE Main breaks ties on the Mathematics NTA score first, then Physics, then Chemistry, then the same wrong-to-right ratio. Each exam tells you, in its own rulebook, which subject it trusts most.
That does not make Physics a side subject in NEET. It is still 25% of the paper, 180 marks you cannot afford to give away. Our NEET 2027 exam pattern guide breaks the 720 marks down section by section.
Raw marks or percentile: how are NEET and JEE ranked?
NEET (UG) 2026 was, in the bulletin's words, "a single day/ single shift exam in PEN and PAPER mode". Everyone in the country answers the same paper at the same time, so the All India Rank comes straight from your marks. The qualifying cut-off is a percentile of those marks: the 50th percentile for General candidates, the 40th for SC, ST and OBC, and the 45th for General and EWS candidates with benchmark disabilities. If you want to see how marks turn into ranks, read NEET marks vs rank.
JEE Main works differently because it cannot put everyone in one room, and this is the NEET vs JEE difference students misread most often. NTA's result press release of 20 April 2026 records ten shifts in the January session and nine in April. Different shifts get different question papers, so NTA converts raw marks into percentile-based NTA scores for each shift and then merges them. If you sit both sessions, only your better NTA score counts.
That percentile then decides who may write JEE Advanced. The 2026 cut-off for the unreserved list was an NTA score of 93.4123549, which is the line that admitted 96,873 candidates in that category. Across all categories, the bulletin limits JEE Advanced to the top 2,50,000 candidates in Paper 1.
NEET vs JEE eligibility: age, attempts and Class 12 subjects
This is where the NEET vs JEE gap is widest, and where students get caught out. Each exam sets its own rules, and JEE Advanced adds a third set on top.
| Rule | NEET (UG) 2026 | JEE (Main) 2026 | JEE (Advanced) 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum age | 17 years by 31 December of the exam year | No age limit | Born on or after 1 October 2001 (1996 for SC, ST, PwD) |
| Upper age | No upper age limit | No age limit | Same birth-date rule |
| Attempts | No cap printed in the bulletin | Class 12 passed in 2024 or 2025, or appearing in 2026 | Maximum two, in two consecutive years |
| Class 12 subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, English | For NIT admission: Physics, Mathematics, a language, plus Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology or a technical vocational subject | Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compulsory, Class 12 first taken in 2025 or 2026 |
| Class 12 marks rule | See the eligibility guide linked below | NITs: 75% aggregate (65% SC, ST, PwD) or top 20 percentile of your board | Not covered in this table |
Two lines in that table matter more than the rest.
First, NEET does not need Mathematics. A PCB student cannot sit for NIT B.Tech seats through JEE, but a PCM student is not locked out of NEET for good. The NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin repeats NMC's Public Notice of 22 November 2023: candidates who study Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Biotechnology with English "even as additional subjects after passing Class 12th" from a recognised board may appear in NEET. It is a real route, but it adds a year of Biology and board paperwork, so check the current bulletin before you plan on it. Our NEET 2027 eligibility criteria post has the full subject and marks rules.
Second, in NEET vs JEE terms, JEE has a clock that NEET does not. JEE Main only counts three Class 12 passing years, and JEE Advanced only gives you two tries. NEET has no upper age limit, and the 2026 bulletin prints no cap on attempts, which our sister site also covers in its NEET attempt limit explainer. That does not make endless drop years a good plan. It just means the rulebook is not the thing stopping you.
How many students take NEET vs JEE each year?
Close to 20 lakh candidates appeared for NEET (UG) 2026, and 11.21 lakh qualified, according to NTA's result press release of 16 July 2026. For JEE Main 2026, NTA counted 16,04,854 unique candidates registered and 15,38,468 who appeared across both sessions. Of those, 8,00,516 appeared in both January and April.
Be careful with these NEET vs JEE numbers. "Qualified" in NEET means you crossed the percentile cut-off and may join counselling. It is not a seat. The JEE Advanced line is not a seat either; it is permission to write a second exam. Neither number tells you how hard it is to get the college you want. For the full NEET series since 2019, see how many students appeared for NEET.
Can you prepare for NEET and JEE together?
Yes, if you take PCMB in Class 11 and 12, and many students do. Physics and Chemistry are common to both exams. The trouble is the calendar and the style, not the syllabus list.
The calendar first, because it is where NEET vs JEE plans usually break. In 2026, JEE Main Session 1 ran from 21 to 28 January and Session 2 from 2 to 8 April. NEET (UG) 2026 was scheduled for 3 May, and JEE Advanced 2026 was held on 17 May, two papers of three hours each, both compulsory. That is three big exams inside four weeks if you aim for everything. For the next cycle, NTA's calendar notice of 16 September 2026 proposes JEE Main 2027 Session 1 for 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January 2027, and it lists no NEET (UG) 2027 date yet. As of 14 October 2026, NTA has not published a NEET (UG) 2027 bulletin.
Then the style, the part of NEET vs JEE preparation nobody warns you about. NEET Physics rewards fast, accurate MCQ work at a minute per question. JEE Physics asks for longer multi-step working and typed numerical answers. Preparing for both means practising two speeds on the same chapters, while also carrying Biology and Mathematics. That is a heavy load on top of the Class 12 board exam.
A practical middle path many families choose: keep PCMB open through Class 11, then decide by the middle of Class 12 based on mock scores, not on hope. If NEET wins, our NEET 2027 Class 11 study plan and future-mbbs.com's NEET UG 2027 preparation guide show how to use the time.

How to make the NEET vs JEE choice, step by step
- Pick the job before the exam. Ask whether you want to treat patients or build things. NEET leads to MBBS and BDS, and JEE to engineering. The exam follows from that answer, not the other way round.
- Check your Class 12 subjects. No Mathematics means no NIT B.Tech through JEE. No Biology means NEET only through the additional-subject route the bulletin describes.
- Be honest about Biology and Maths. Biology is half of NEET. Maths is a third of JEE Main and its first tie-breaker. Your weaker subject should not be the one the exam weighs most.
- Sit one full mock of each, timed. 180 questions in 180 minutes on paper, then 75 questions in 3 hours on a screen. A previous NEET paper and a previous JEE Main paper do the job. How you feel after each tells you more than any article.
- Count your attempts. JEE Advanced gives you two tries in consecutive years, and JEE Main only counts three Class 12 passing years. NEET has no upper age limit. Plan drop years with that in mind.
- Decide by mid Class 12. Keeping both open into the final months usually means doing neither well.
Is NEET harder than JEE?
Neither bulletin answers the NEET vs JEE difficulty question, and anyone who gives you a single answer is guessing. What the official rules do show is that the two exams are hard in different ways. NEET is a speed and precision test with one sitting a year, so one bad afternoon costs a year. JEE Main gives two sessions and counts the better one, but JEE Advanced, the route to IITs, is a second, longer exam for a much smaller group. The right NEET vs JEE choice is the one whose kind of difficulty suits you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Nothing in either bulletin stops you, and the dates usually do not clash. In 2026 JEE Main ran in January and April, NEET (UG) was scheduled for 3 May and JEE Advanced was held on 17 May. You need PCMB in Class 12 to use both results for admission, and preparing for two exam styles at once is a heavy load.
No. The NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin asks for Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English in Class 12. Mathematics is not required. Students who studied PCM can still qualify by passing Biology as an additional subject from a recognised board, as NMC's Public Notice of 22 November 2023 allows, but check the current bulletin first.
Both. NEET gives +4 for a correct answer and minus 1 for a wrong one. JEE Main 2026 uses the same scheme for its MCQs and also for its numerical value questions in Section B. An unanswered question scores zero in both exams, so a blank is always safer than a wild guess.
The NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin sets a minimum age of 17 and no upper age limit, and it prints no cap on attempts. JEE Main has no age limit but only accepts candidates who passed Class 12 in the two previous years or are appearing this year. JEE Advanced allows a maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years.
NEET (UG) 2026 was one paper in a single shift, so every candidate answered the same questions and marks can be compared directly. JEE Main 2026 ran in 19 shifts with different papers, so NTA converts each shift's raw marks into percentile-based NTA scores to make them comparable, and counts your better session.
